Three FAQs about sealing engineered hardwood flooring

Engineered hardwood flooring combines the beauty of natural wood, such as oak, hickory, or maple, with extreme durability. It's also less prone to warping, making it the ideal choice for some higher-than-normal moisture areas.

FAQ #1: Is sealing necessary?

Not usually necessary, but it may be desired. Engineered wood flooring comes pre-finished with an ultra-hard top coat.
You may, however, want extra protection from leaks and spills. It acts as a moisture barrier and fills in any gaps.

FAQ: #2 What sealant do they use at the factory?

You may have heard that these floors are ultra-durable. A super-tough aluminum oxide coating is used for engineered wood flooring.

This can only be used in controlled settings, like the factory. However, it increases the scratch and dent resistance, making it great if you have pets.

FAQ # 3: If I seal, what's the best one?

There are many good ones, but it depends on your personal preference. For example, many prefer penetrating oil because it soaks through rather than sitting on top of the wood.

This makes it part of the wood, which many find more natural. It's also ultra-durable because it hardens, not just dries. As a result, many feel the surfaces are better protected from scratches.

Engineered wood floors are sealed with paraffin wax, water-based polyurethane; oil-based polyurethane; shellac, and urethane. Ask the flooring expert about the best type for you.

Engineered hardwood flooring construction

On the surface, engineered and solid wood look similar to knots, grains, undertones, textures, etc. However, the construction underneath is different. As a result, this wood is more stable and better able to handle water.
